The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Spark proved that no matter how small, a car can be as safe as ever. In its first year of eligibility, Chevrolet Spark is a Top Safety Pick earning commendation from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, becoming the only minicar to do so in 2014 model year testing.
To snag the Top Safety Pick badge, the Spark achieved the highest-possible score of “good” in the IIHS’s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, as well as “acceptable” in the new small overlap test.
Chevrolet was able to bolster the minicar’s crashworthiness by strengthening its front-end structure to better absorb and distribute impact energy around cabin occupants, and by using a significant amount of lightweight high-strength steels in the underbody and upper body of the car.
“Spark’s safety structure makes extensive use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels and its robust passenger protection package includes 10 standard air bags,” said Gay Kent, GM general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness.
